PROJECT 1: TECHNICAL AND MOTION GRAPHICS SENSIBILITIES
"Students are given variety of tasks from basics to advance that
develop their motion graphics sensibilities by increasing their
technical proficiency and knowledge. Each student will explore and increase their technical proficiency
and knowledge levels in the appropriate software individually but also
with assistance of peers and facilitator."
____________
Project 1 Progress
For this assignment, we were tasked to recreate the last 4 compositions with
our own twist and create a whole new 10-second collage video with all of the
compositions that were given. We can only use basic shapes and lines to complete these tasks.
_________
PART 1
The compositions that we needed to change were Symmetry, Focus, Scale and
Rhythm. Since we’re already limited to basic shapes and lines, I wanted to
create something simple yet unique.
For Symmetry, I thought it’d be fun to test out my abilities since I have a
little bit of experience when it comes to using After Effects. I decided to
start off with squares at opposite ends of each other to create the
symmetrical pattern needed.
After that I used position, scale and rotation to achieve the desired
outcome. My plan was to make the graphics have a cool transition that
started at 2 points and end at 1 point.

To achieve swift and smooth movements, I first used the easy ease as a base
then adjusted the arches within the speed graph.

A good YouTube tutorial I found by Move Shapes helped me quite a lot
during the remakes of the compositions. Here is a link to the video
itself:

For Focus, I decided to create an eye that follows and focuses on a moving
ball. Similar to the composition for Symmetry, I only used position and
scale to achieve the outcome I was going for. Same with the Symmetry composition, I achieved smooth movement by
using easy ease as a base and adjusting the arches in the speed graph.

For Scale, I decided I wanted to do circles that pop out from the middle that are bigger and thinner than the last when coming out and going back in again; This creates different aspects of scale like the circle size and its own line width.
I've achieved this by changing the scales and line width of each circle and adding keyframes in alternating patterns so that it can come out after the first one has reached its actual size

For Rhythm, I wanted the squares to move in a wave rhythm where the first one gets bigger, the second one follows, and so on and so forth till the fifth one; This creates a literal rhythmic wave that can be seen in music videos where the waveforms react to noise.
I've achieved this by using the scale function but only scaling the vertical portion so it goes bigger or smaller vertically and not horizontally. I've also added keyframes in alternating patterns to create the waveform look that I wanted.

After finishing all of the compositions, I've compiled and put them into the 'COMPOSITION' file that's been made for us to showcase our works.

PART 2
Using the premade and own compositions in Part 1, we needed to use them all in Part 2's Composition Remix that Mr Fauzi had already prepared for us. Before making the actual composition remix, I went and found a soundtrack that fitted well with the remix, downloaded it and put it into the remix itself.

For Scene 1, I started off by using my Scale composition. I've made the compositions in varying sizes and placed them in an ascending order for aesthetic purposes.
Fig 2.2, Part 2 Composition Progress #1, 20/10/2024
For Scene 2, I used the Movement, Symmetry and Focus compositions. Using movement as the main base, I've made them large and have the corner directed towards the middle to create a focal point, where the Focus composition is, and hierarchy. Additionally, I've made the Symmetry composition smaller and placed it in the middle of the Movement composition to not leave it blank.
For Scene 3, I used the Hierarchy and Rhythm compositions. I've duplicated the Hierarchy compositions and placed them diagonally to intentionally create a pattern but left the bottom left for the Rhythm composition; The different waves create a focal point towards the Rhythm composition and make it look interesting by being different.
Fig 2.4, Part 2 Composition Progress #3, 20/10/2024
For Scene 4, I used the Balance and Direction compositions. By using the Balance composition as a seesaw, I've made it look like they're pushing the middle Direction composition upwards; The direction leaving the scene helps to set up the next one as a transitional point. I've also added 2 more at the side to make it less empty.
Fig 2.5, Part 2 Composition Progress #4, 21/10/2024
For Scene 5, I've mainly used the Focus composition but one Direction composition to connect it from the previous scene. After the Direction composition comes up, it turns into a ball that's in the Focus composition; The ball placement reflects the Scene 1 placement of the Scale composition which I felt ties the whole thing together nicely.

Week 5 Practical Progress
For this exercise, I wanted to try out the 3D camera that Mr Fauzi had
mentioned and used in the class. I decided to do this exercise as a way to
see my own improvement and test out my abilities. We started off by using the images he sent via the Drive link and after choosing the images, I went ahead into Adobe Photoshop to create the
collage needed.
For the first attempt, I wanted it to look like the people
in the station are travelling into a different universe; a wavy space that
defies anything logical.

Fig 3.1, Collage Progress #1, 25/10/2024
After creating the collage, I felt that the collage was too expansive,
especially after looking at the examples given, so I decided to simplify it
into a smaller collage that’s easier to manage.

Fig 3.2 Final Collage, 25/10/2024
After finishing my collage, I went ahead and imported it into Adobe After
Effects to start the editing process.
Once I was in, I used the knowledge that our lecturer provided, to utilise
the camera work better, I decided to focus more on that aspect rather than
the actual collage itself and therefore it didn’t have much movement.
The graphics were moved slightly to at least have some motion, I’ve decided
to make it sway left and right to keep its simplicity just like the collage
itself.

REFLECTION
For this assignment, I felt that I was able to learn quite a lot despite
it being so minimal and simple. I was expecting something more
grand but I had realised that I needed to know the basics first before
going into anything else. I had, and still do, admire my classmates and
friends' works as their creativity makes me strive to better in my future
works. Overall, I think that I learned quite a lot during this period and felt that I can definitely improve more with the practice and
time that I will be investing into this module.
