_______________
FINAL PROJECT

"INSTRUCTION:
Based on FLIP group topic research, produce a basic video animation.

DESCRIPTION:
Using a processed design framework, you will now produce an infographic report to present the given information to a ‘target audience’ with the purpose of:
  1. Creating awareness (such as Global Warming, Recycle, etc.)
  2. Explaining a process (such as "how to" video)
  3. Defining a concept (such as "What is Fast Fashion", "What is Color Wheel", etc.)
Any time based media and software using photography, vector imagery.

Design Considerations:
  • Organization Principles – LATCH and Content Organization
  • Aesthetic Principles – Animation principles
  • Cognitive Principles – Principles of visualization

Output Expectation:
The presentation must be deliberated on, consider each assessment rubric of sorts to your final outcome:
  • Show causality
  • Multivariate graphics and visuals
  • Integrate word number and images
  • Content count
  • Within eyesight
  • Use multiple charts
  • Do not de-quantify

REQUIREMENT:
Video resolution: 1920px x 1080px HD (min 1.5 mins max 3 mins)

SUBMISSION:
1. A ± 3 minute animated infographic uploaded into YouTube (unlisted)

2. Digital compilation into your Google Drive Folder

3. Online posts in your E-portfolio as your reflective studies(Please attach the E-Portfolio link here for submission.)"

____________
Week 1

For this week, we were introduced to the subject during the lecture and to showcase our exercise 1 progression. During the showcase, Mr Shamsul asked us to create a group of 8 or above to start our FLIP presentation. I didn't really know anyone so I made an acquaintance and we decided to join Group 1: Team 2 and everyone else joined as well. My group members were
  1. EDITA CHEW EN THUNG
  2. GRACIELLA LIMPAH
  3. AISYA DIVA ANWAGODSA
  4. CINDY CLARISSA LESLIE
  5. SEH ZI QI [Me]
  6. EMILY SOH CHING-LING
  7. ENG YAN LING
  8. LOY MAY SHEEN
  9. SUNG J XIN

Once we have our group, I decided to make a Whatsapp group for communication purposes. Once we started to chat, we started to decide our topic and we landed on "Stereotypes Against Gen Z". With this new information, we went ahead and picked the roles we wanted to do for each category that Mr Shamsul provided us.

I decided to choose Objective of the video since no one had chosen it at the time. It also had a slightly heavy workload since we need to research to get the objectives. The objectives I found were these:

The google doc link is also provided for a comprehensive look on our topic.

____________
Week 2-3

For Week 2, it was our turn to present our FLIP presentation mentioned above. Here is the final canva of the proposal.

Once we were done with our presentation, we decided to rest for a week before going back to make more progress for our final project infographic video.

____________
Week 4

For this week, we were asked by Mr Shamsul to create a miroboard so that we can show our progress to him. This board also helped us to figure out our visual references, titles, software, roles and timeline. We all chose our respective roles that we felt confident with and I went into the animator role since the software we were going to use was Adobe After Effects which I have some knowledge and experience on. I only had to wait for everyone's work to be able to do my work.

____________
Week 5-7

For Week 5, I wasn't present since I had to attend and help the exhibition my parents were at but the people who researched, wrote the script and made the art direction weren't done so I had to wait a few more days.

_________
By the end of Week 6, Edita, who was in charge of Art Direction, was done with the scenes that were made from the storyboard. Since I had the scenes, I went ahead and started on animating the process on Adobe After Effects.

Fig 5.1, Finalised Scenes

Since Edita had sent each scene as an Illustrator file, I was able to put everything without altercations into After Effects by setting it as a composition. I also put them into folders for my own ease of use.

Fig 5.2, Composition Files

Once I had imported all the scenes, I went into animating. To create movement within the scenes, I used the Position, Rotation, Scale and occassionally using Opacity if needed. I had also put the scenes within their own pre-comp since the scenes have multiple layers which are hard to keep track of if it's not within its own folder.

Emily, our editor, asked for the first part of the animation since she needed to see if it would fit with the voice overs that May did. This is the first part that I had done before moving on.

Fig 5.4, Part 1 of Final Infographic Video

After discussing about the animation, they said that some parts needed to be rearranged and to either have it shorter or longer as the voice overs were still too long even with increased speed on the audio. I asked them to send over the finalised voice over audio so that it would be much easier to animate and know the timing of each important part to animate on.

Once I had gotten the MP3 file, I went back to animating the remaining scenes. For Scene 20, some scenes had attached graphics which weren't ideal for movement as the Gen Z, a moving graphic, is attached to the table, a stagnant graphic.

To deal with this issue, I started by duplicating the attached layers into different layers, use the Pen Tool to create a mask, and renamed each layer to the correct order as to not confuse myself.

I had also used vector icons found from the website Flaticon as some scenes felt lacking without the graphics to emphasize each point being made.

Fig 5.7, Progress #2 of Final Infographic Video

For Scene 22, we needed text and lines to indicate the important points that come out of the Gen Z brain. I felt that a normal line would be boring and went and researched how to create a moving dotted line for a more aesthetic effect.

The simple yet effective tutorial I found was by Alias called Make DOTTED LINE ANIMATION in After Effects | Tutorial

Fig 5.8, Make DOTTED LINE ANIMATION in After Effects | Tutorial

Using this tutorial as my guide, I created the moving dotted lines to showcase each branch needed. I also used the text layer and wrote down the emphasised words of each category.

The font we decided to use was called Damia's Hand because it has a dreary look that best describes the anxiety and prejudice Gen Zs face within the workplace environment. I have also put each line and text together to indicate which is which to help me locate it easier.

Once I was done with all the animation, I went ahead and exported it with the audio and sent it off to Emily for her to complete the editing by adding background music and appropriate sound effects.

FEEDBACK

Week 2:
  • Target audiences need to be more niche, choose 1 or 2
  • They like the target audience because it puts down a POV for them; tweak it so the video is like a “Survival Guide for Gen Z in Workplaces”
  • Target audience should probably be for Gen Z

REFLECTION

For this project, I felt that we were a good team. There were no arguments whatsoever and we were able to compromise easily on each task as we all knew this was a project we needed to focus our attention on when needed. I am quite happy that I was able to get such good teammates that encouraged and helped bring some of our ideas to life with our effective communication and combined skills. I was upset at myself for not being able to give the animation on time because I had Major Project 1 to worry about which delayed my work significantly; I will do my best to be more consistent with my time management in the future to ensure that I don't drag my team members down.

I also want to say that each group's work and topic was very unique and refreshing as some problems genuinely helped my health like the sleep deprivation one and also piqued my curiousity with the coffee around the world. The information given was sometimes concise and straightforward that I didn't even notice that time went by quickly when each group presented.

Overall, this experience taught me a valuable lesson on how a project can go smoothly as long as each member was able to give effective communication and show organised teamwork. Thanks to my awesome teammates and lecturer for helping me with this module!
