PROJECT 2: PITCH BIBLE

"Students must create a pitch bible document that calls for providing visual materials to accompany content information in the form of slide presentations. Students are also required to present the pitch bible."

____________
Research

After being briefed about the assignment, I went home and watched some videos that I felt were a good example of how to make a pitch bible, Mr Kamal was also kind enough to provide us with links to previous students' works which made this process much easier.

I specifically liked the RM Pitch bible that Mr Kamal had provided, it gave a lot of detail when it came to describing the characters, both heroes and villains, that will be appearing in the

____________
Progress

Once I was done with the research I started off by creating a PowerPoint for my pitch bible because it's a good way to put condensed information for people to review when needed.

Fig 2.1, Progression of Pitch Bible

The information written in the pitch was from my Project 1: Scriptwriting. I felt that the details within the scriptwriting didn't encompass what I wanted to showcase so I decided to flesh out the story, characters and world description more within the slides.

Cover Page Progression

After that, I went ahead with designing the cover page; I made a few sketches with the title, An Adventurous Recipe, in mind.

Fig 2.2, Sketch #1 of Cover Page

Sketch #1 had an open fire with a caldron on top, inside the caldron was the recipe that Raina wanted to recreate. This encompassed the fantasy and cooking element very well but it doesn't really evoke feelings of a homecooked meal which is what I wanted to show.

Fig 2.3, Sketch #2 of Cover Page

Sketch #2 is a wooden bowl & spoon, filled with the recipe Raina wants to recreate. This sketch has the most solid ground for the feelings I want to evoke because a bowl of soup may be simple but it's the love and attention to the soup that makes it delicious and homemade.

Fig 2.4, Sketch #3 of Cover Page

Sketch #3 has the same art as the second sketch but with a different title placement. The title mostly sitting in the middle signifies its importance, but the smaller font creates the opposite effect which destroys the intent that I wanted to capture so I scrapped the idea.

Once I was done sketching the cover page, I went ahead with rendering the design of sketch #2 as the final design of my cover page for my pitch bible.

Fig 2.5, Rendering the Cover Page

I've specifically chosen colours that felt warm for the bowl of soup while a cooler colour like blue was chosen for the background. This indicates that the soup is the warmth that Raina wants to have back but also tells us that it's a warm bowl of soup by the puffs of smoke surrounding it; adding another layer of warmth towards the literal and figurative meaning.

The chosen blue background helps to contrast greatly with the soup, not only creating a single focal point for the viewers to look at; it also gives a sense of solace, as if hinting that finding this recipe can give Raina the peace she finally wants.

Character Reference Progression

Once I was done with finalising the cover page, I went ahead with creating the character references & descriptions. I started off with Raina Jenesis, for a more detailed description, please go back to Project 1: Scriptwriting.

I had already made a character sheet for Raina for my 3D Modelling class, so I just used that for my character reference and drew her in a new pose with both her normal and adventure attire.

Fig 3.1, Sketch & Finalised version of Raina Jenesis

After finishing Raina, I moved on to Calista. She was a completely new character that I had created for the sake of the plotline so I shall be explaining her in detail.

Fig 3.2, Sketch & Finalised version of Calista Aldro

Calista Aldro is a half-human half-elf wizard who's also Raina's childhood best friend. Since she isn't of the same species as others, she has been discriminated against a few times which makes her a snarky and witty person towards everyone at first glance; Although she's mean to everyone, she is soft but brutally honest with Raina, creating a good dynamic between the two characters.

She had a similar situation to Raina where her village had been destroyed by the conflicts of war with the neighbouring country. Raina and her mother were the ones to pick them up, feed them and clothe them until they were able to get back on their own; making Calista and her mother feel indebted towards Raina's family. This creates an even better friendship and dynamic between the two as they bond over the loss of their old homes while also being able to keep each other grounded when they're at their worst; this is what I want the argument within the story to be about.

Overall, I wanted a character that helped to contrast but also compliment Raina's personality and attitude, playing off each other's strengths and weaknesses while also being able to think the same when needed.

World Description Progression

Following that, I went into describing the world description. Since I wasn't good at drawing environments, I decided to use art references from an artist called @homenobi_bg on X, formally known as Twitter. They are a Japanese artist who specialises in backgrounds, they would mostly draw ruined or scenic backgrounds that capture the buildings and flora that inhabit it.

Fig 4.1, @homenobi_bg on X

The pictures that I decided to use were scenic backgrounds that mainly consisted of dense leaves or forests since the characters' residences are within a dense forest named Trethen Forest which consists of many flora and fauna that help hide them from any outsiders.

Video Progression

Finally finishing the presentation slides for the pitch bible, I went ahead with recording myself and pitched the idea as required. Once I was done recording, I went ahead with putting the recorded videos and images into Premiere Pro for editing.

Fig 5.1, Editing the pitch bible video

This process was mostly tedious as I stumbled on my words a lot during the recording and had to cut loads of unnecessary "ums" and "ahs" out of the final video. I also added cuts, background music and sound effects to make the video more appealing.

REFLECTION

This project made me realise that making a pitch bible doesn't only just require characters and a story, while it is fun to have the basics, it feels much better to flesh out a written story that you made yourself. Being able to pitch my ideas, stories, characters and world descriptions made me feel a sense of achievement as I never really had the chance to showcase my drawing and writing skills towards an audience that isn't just my friends; I know it's not a real pitch bible but it still felt really cool. Mr Kamal and my friends gave me the encouragement I needed to push forward which also made me enjoy this project more as they were very supportive of the decisions I made during the progression phase. One thing to learn would be to not judge a book by its cover as a pitch bible may look simple to do but it was quite hard to showcase specific information that is needed as there may be a lot of things that need to be explained in simpler terms. Overall, this was a good experience to take into the future where I would need to pitch my ideas for possible animation series that I want to create.
