_______________
PROJECT 3: ACTION ANIMATION

"Use your character from your previous project 1, and animate a 5-second physical action sequence. Choose an action sequence that involves physical movement, such as a fight, chase, or sports-related activity. Develop a clear understanding of the desired outcome, key actions, and the emotions you want to convey in the scene. Create a storyboard that visualises the key moments, actions and emotion of the scene. Incorporate a variety of camera shots, angles and visual continuity to enhance the visual storytelling."

____________
Progress

After being briefed about the project, I went ahead and started brainstorming ideas for my final animation.

Storyboard Progression

My first idea was going to be the character cooking a meal near the fire, the actions included chopping, cooking, and eating with many ingredients present. However, Mr Kamal disapproved of this decision because there would be too many props to handle as a beginner animator so it would be wise to stick to something more simpler.

My second idea was going to be for the character to train by doing consecutive punches and kicks towards the air. Mr Kamal was ok with this idea since it didn't require a lot of props and it fit with the action animation that was handed by the brief; But I felt like it didn't encompass the character all too well so I put this idea in the drafts.

My final idea was to have the character pick up a piece of wood, put it into the unlit campfire, strike a matchstick, light up the campfire and enjoy the lit campfire. Mr Kamal was hesitant about me doing this idea but I felt like it was more in line with my character than the second idea so Mr Kamal approved of me doing this idea.

After brainstorming for ideas, I went ahead and made the storyboard for my final idea and here's how it turned out.

Animation Progression

After figuring out what I wanted to do, I went ahead with making the backgrounds since it would be easier to animate on top of a still background instead of a moving one. So I went into Procreate to start drawing my backgrounds.

Once I was done with the backgrounds, I used a red pen to draw the moving objects and where the character would be positioned; This helped me visualise where I would be animating and what I needed to do, like in the storyboard.

Next, I went into Flipaclip to animate everything, since I was under a time constraint because of my poor time management skills, I decided to start immediately with the rough & tie-downs altogether since I was used to animating using the straight-ahead method. Although some parts I did use the point-to-point method since it was much easier to know where the placement of objects and characters would be. I also coloured the animation in Flipaclip since it would be much easier to add the shading in the editing phase.

Editing Progression

Once I was done with the colouring, I went into editing the animation with sound effects from Pixabay, like adding night ambience and the matchstick flicking to create a more immersive experience for the viewers.

REFLECTION

Throughout the 14 weeks of this module, I felt that my knowledge of animation had grown quite a lot since it first started. I have made smaller animations before but I have never made one like this even though it was only 10 seconds; I had a lot of fun doing this project as well as this module because I'm trying to major in animation and this is something I'd be interested in doing in the future! Although there were minor setbacks like my inability to actually figure out my time management, I felt that some parts of the animation I did could've been much better but I didn't realise until after submission that I didn't have the time to correct it and make it better; I will have to get better at managing my time in the future but for now, this is the best I've got. Overall, the experience I've received from this module and this project both had their ups and downs but the majority of it was really good and I hope that I can go further into this course in the next semesters that are to come.
