____________
TASK 3: DESIGN

"After analysing the design of your choice in Task 2, you will now produce a work of design, inspired/influenced by the one you had analysed, or as a reaction to it. You should also apply your knowledge of design principles in your creation."

____________
SKETCHES

Before creating the final design, I was advised to create multiple sketches to create different compositions using inspiration from the artwork I have chosen in Task 1 and Task 2.

Fig 1.1, Sketch #1, 13/3/2024

Sketch #1 is similar to the artwork I've chosen to analyse thoroughly, like the red and black colours used as the fore and background while also using the blue and yellow figure as the focal point; all similarities are present within the previously mentioned artwork.

I felt that it captures the same feels of the inspired artwork, where the figures are covered by roses as if being seen through rose-tinted glasses, everything is made ethereal, while in reality everything shatters the nice ideology and stops the world viewing the mental toll as something that isn't serious.

Fig 1.2, Sketch #2, 13/3/2024

Sketch #2 showcases more of the sad but optimistic side of the inspired artwork. The idea comes from rainy days and how they're usually portrayed as a sad occurrence, but I want to focus on the aftermath where the sun shines brightly as if the storm before was just a mere hallucination.

This comes from the fact that I want people to focus on what's to come instead of what they're being hindered by, as someone who's an artist who constantly gets art block, the struggles of being held back by my own abilities always make me sad and stressed. But with the help of others around me, I can get back on my own two feet and start drawing again and leave the sad and stressed version of me behind, using their experience as a way to bridge through my struggles.

Fig 1.3, Sketch #3, 13/3/2024

Sketch #3 was quite different from Sketch #1 and Sketch #2 as I had planned to do an animation instead of just a still artwork. The idea is about a teardrop formulating a figure that's crying, during their crying, a comforting hand reaches out to them and empathises with their pain and hugs them like the sketch.

I had gone for this route as a way to emphasise the feelings within the artwork more than the initial meaning, where people can get scared and anxious from differing situations but hopefully, it will be better if someone is willing to reach out and help.

Fig 1.4, Sketch #4, 13/3/2024

Sketch #4 goes deeper into the feelings felt. Both sadness and comfort can come from the same place and can also be tied together if you look through yourself enough; however, we tend to separate those emotions into good and bad but they are both double-edged swords that cut from the same cloth.

I want to emphasise that even if they are separate, they are still together, bonded by our emotions and bodies.

_________
Gaining Feedback:
After getting feedback from Dr Charles, he quite liked Sketch #3 and the idea behind it since animation is something that I will be specialising in, I should go ahead with creating a gif that is inspired by the artwork as that gives me creative liberty on what to do

____________
DESIGN PROGRESS

Once I decided that Sketch #3 would be my final pick, I went ahead with creating the mainframes to establish the main shots that I wanted to focus on.

Fig 2.1, Frames before adding in between, 17/3/2024

Once I was done with the mainframes, I asked Dr Charles for feedback and he said that it was quite interesting and that he was looking forward to seeing my finished work! He also pointed out something that I didn't notice which was how I had centred everything which creates an establishing focal point.

I went ahead with his feedback and added the in-between frames before the colours. This helps create smoother animation and transitions that are more pleasing towards the eyes.

Fig 2.2, Uncoloured fully animated gif, 23/3/2024

After I was done with the animation, I went ahead with colouring the finished animated gif. I decided on the primary colours because they connect back to the artwork and also resemble the feelings that Terrence Cummings had initially planned out.

_______________
FINAL DESIGN

Fig 3.1, Seh Zi Qi_Tears of Comfort_Design Principles Task 3, 25/3/2024

Title:
Tears of Comfort

Rationale:
Tears of Comfort, inspired by the artwork, Reimagine, 9 Mins of Healing by Terrance Cummings; is an animated GIF that shows the comfort and empathy that people need during hard or struggling situations. Where mental tolls aren’t portrayed as a ‘minor issue’ and can affect the person immensely when under it; where the comfort of the other person being there is enough to help those who are in need. The gesture itself may seem small but as long as the person knows that they’re there, they will figure it out and find what they need; as the saying goes, one small step for man, one giant leap for mankind. I am hoping for this GIF to spread a positive light within the mental health industry and also a way to share my experiences, I was in a hard place once and had the support of my friends and family who helped me through situations that I had challenged before.

FEEDBACK

Week 6:
Dr Charles quite liked the animation I gave him, he said that there's potential so I will have to achieve it! He also liked that the animation was centred which made it establish a focal point, something I didn't think about before he mentioned it.

Week 7:
I didn't really ask for advice as I knew what I needed to do, therefore no feedback was received.

Comments

  1. The final full coloured version isn't working. Can you re-upload it? However the previous version works and its very very good! A lot of compositional value that draws the attention to the story frame by frame! good work!
