_______________
TASK 2: VISUAL ANALYSIS

"This task requires you to assess, investigate, document and analyse the existing art/design work you selected in Task 1. You will study the design principles found in that work, as well as the size, placement, purpose, and effectiveness of the design concerning the UNSDG goal that you have chosen."

____________

Before doing the final visual analysis, I decided to make a mind map of the artwork I’ve chosen.

Fig 1.1, Mindmap for former analysis, 29/2/2024

After making the mindmap, it helped me to visualise the artwork in more detail and put my thoughts into words which is what this task has required us to do.

_______________
FINAL Visual Analysis

Fig 2.1, Reimagine, 9 Mins of Healing by Terrance Cummings, 13/2/2024

Visual Analysis:

Firstly, we start off with the Focal Point because our vision is directed towards the saturated blue despite yellow being universally the brightest colour; this shows that even the brightest colour can look dull next to things that are shrouded with issues like sadness and illness. Secondly, Contrast can be found within the colours and tones of the artwork as the red background and black hand create a striking contrast between the dulled yellow and saturated blue; creating multiple emotions within the piece, the red and black represent the toll that mental illnesses create, the yellow represents the comfort, empathy and hope that everyone wants and the blue represents the despair and loss that people had when trying to fight those mental battles. Thirdly, Hierarchy is another element that is prominent within the artwork itself; We’re drawn towards the blue not only because of its tone and colour but also wanting to know the story behind what the colour had gone through, with the other colours adding more context towards the finished artwork. Continuing with the analysis for hierarchy, the artist had intentionally chosen those colours to represent the reimagining of George Floyd’s death; where he’s being cradled by someone, the yellow colour, instead of suffering the improper force, the red colour, used by the policemen against him when he had been exhibiting signs of anxiety and distress, the blue colour. This could’ve been avoided if the police hadn’t had prejudiced views of African Americans and used the proper procedure when dealing with him. The next element that can be found is the Rule of Thirds, as the intersection points align with the focal points of the artwork, like the blue figure mentioned earlier. Another element contained within the artwork would be Proportion because the black hand is disproportionate to humans, creating and adding more emphasis towards what mental illnesses represent; where we’re faced with the harsh realities that shatter the rose-tinted glasses.

Extra Notes:

Lastly, Movement is present within the falling leaves, creating a fleeting yet gentle moment for the blue figure, with the flowers themselves being implied as a halo that creates a peaceful moment, signifying the gentleness and comfort even more by being there.

FEEDBACK

Week 4:
My paragraph was ok, it needs to be more descriptive and, if we really want to, we can add or find a story within the artwork itself to create a narrative that is hidden. Dr Charles quite liked my movement analysis as it felt quite poetic.

Week 5:
I wasn't here therefore I didn't get feedback; planned leave.
