Research
I first researched the 5 Maybank MyTIGER Values which were:
- Teamwork: Working as a team, valuing and treating each other with respect and dignity
- Integrity: Maintaining integrity and upholding high honesty, professionalism, and ethical standards in all interactions.
- Growth: Having a strong drive for continuous improvement and innovation fueled by passion.
- Excellence and Efficiency: Dedicated to achieving exceptional performance and providing excellent service towards others.
- Relationship Building: Actively cultivating to endure mutually advantageous partnerships towards everyone.
Once I was done with the research on the values, I went ahead with choosing the SDG goal that I wanted. I ended up choosing goal 15 which is Life on Land.
Goal 15: Life on Land:
- This SDG emphasizes the importance of protecting, restoring, and promoting the sustainable use of terrestrial ecosystems. It demands that forests be managed sustainably and that desertification, land degradation and biodiversity loss be stopped. Recognizing that a thriving life on land is essential for our existence, highlighting the need to address the damage caused by deforestation, habitat loss, and land degradation. It highlights the reality that encouraging the sustainable use of ecosystems and safeguarding biodiversity is not just a cause but also an essential component for our own survival.
The targets include:
- Conserve and restore terrestrial and freshwater ecosystems.
- End deforestation and restore degraded forests.
- End desertification and restore degraded land.
- Ensure the conservation of mountain ecosystems.
- Protect biodiversity and natural habitats. Promote access to genetic resources and fair sharing of the benefits.
- Eliminate poaching and trafficking of protected species.
- Prevent invasive alien species on land and in water ecosystems.
- Integrate ecosystem and biodiversity in governmental planning.
- Increase financial resources to conserve and sustainably use ecosystems and biodiversity.
- Finance and incentivise sustainable forest management.
- Combat global poaching and trafficking.
Things to do:

| Fig 1.1, Things to do |
Since my goal was Life on Land and to achieve this I will be looking into different compositional pieces where it’s mostly landscapes to encourage myself to stay focused on the certain SDG and to also challenge myself in drawing landscapes which are one of the things I really want to learn.

| Fig 1.2, Moodboard for Life on Land |
Landscape artists are really good at capturing camera compositions so I also wanted to try if I’m able to depict the world as a more vibrant and lustrous place where anything can grow, so overgrown plants or an abundance of trees/forests is an ideal way to show those depictions.
I wasn’t really sure how to tackle this sketch-wise but only had inspiration from both the second and third pictures I had as my mood board. So I chose to sketch from those inspirations.
 |
| Fig 2.1, Sketch #1 for Life on Land |
For sketch #1, I felt alright with this composition but wanted to explore more, it also felt a bit lacklustre and similar to the third picture I found, so I decided to draw up more inspiration so that I had a variety to choose from.
 |
| Fig 2.2, Sketch #2 for Life on Land |
For sketch #2, I used the second picture from the mood board to give me a whimsical feel, where the human and animal are surrounded by tall trees and foliage to cover them from the world on the outside. Though I quite liked this composition, I decided to draw one last one to choose from the 3, if need be I will draw more and compare again for better depictions.
 |
| Fig 2.3, Sketch #3 for Life on Land |
For sketch #3, I thought of an idea where the idea is of the human enjoying the nature that is being surrounded by. Hence why the sketch, there’s a person lying down on the overgrown grass, appreciating the feel and ambience it creates. This connects back to the SDG as it’s what we would want to achieve in 2030, where we restore degraded lands and terrestrial ecosystems.

| Fig 2.4, Sketch #4 for Life on Land |
Sketch #4 was after gaining feedback from Mr Hafiz, he said that sketches #1 to #3 are alright but to consider the wording of the poster. Instead of something that's similar to the title of the goal, I should go for different words that give more of an impact. So I came up with the title 'Survive Or Thrive', it's simple and impactful like how the lecturer wants it.
 |
| Fig 2.5, Sketch #5 for Life on Land |
Sketch #5 was after getting feedback from Sketch #4. He said that the title 'Survive Or Thrive' gives the imagery of a scale, the 'Or' weighs heavily onto both sides of the spectrum where it depends on the person to tip where they want the future to go.
After thinking about it, I went with Sketch #5 as my final sketch and went on with digitising in Adobe Illustrator.
I started off doing the 'Thrive' side as I already have some ideas on how to proceed with digitisation. Using the Pencil, Shape and Shape Builder Tool, I made the deer, tree, foliage and animals. I've used a more saturated colour scheme as to show how vibrant nature could be if it wasn't polluted with toxicity. This connects back towards the 'Thrive' part as the ecosystem that consists of flora and fauna lives peacefully which is what we want to achieve with this SDG.

| Fig 3.1, Digitisation progress |
After finishing the 'Thrive' side, I went ahead and did the opposite which is the 'Survive' side. This was the trickier side as I had different ideas circulating within my head on what I should do to make it look better than the sketch. Similar to the 'Thrive' side, I used the Pencil, Shape, Gradient and Shape Builder Tools to help create this part.
Most of the ideas changed after I made the truck full of toxic waste barrels, I wanted to portray the pollution we've produced with muted and grey-toned colours, unlike the saturated colours we've seen. This shows us that we've been taking earth for granted and if we keep this up, we'll be filled with nothing but toxic waste and gas if we don't do something about it.
.jpg) |
| Fig 3.2, Digitisation progress |
I've made the scale into a gold colour to portray that this is a 'golden' opportunity to start as we may not be early to save the planet but we still aren't too late to create a better future. The white Gaussian blurred box behind the words is more for the viewers' eyes to gravitate towards, where they're able to either see the words 'Survive Or Thrive'. And to add more contrast and make each side pop out more, I've added a circle gradient using the Shape and Gradient tool to achieve this effect.

| Fig 3.3, Digitisation progress |
Once I was finished with the main part of the poster, I didn't know which background colour to choose from as the blue helps contrast with the golden scale and show a blue sky but the white background helps set a focal point towards this work.
Fig 3.4, Digitisation progress
After asking my friends for help on this matter, what stuck with me the most was that someone had the suggestion of using a warmer tone to signify the world's current state on how it's overheating and how it can also help with tieing everything together. I really liked that idea and I went with a warmer-toned colour as my final background colour.

Title:
Survive Or Thrive
Description:
The SDG I chose for my poster was Life on Land. My narrative starts with the betterment of what we can do to make life on land a good choice, either surviving or thriving, hence I chose a scale to represent what the future holds depending on which side you add. I wanted to portray the good and bad that the Earth currently has, with the left side of the scale being the industrialised part where everything is murky and dark with nuclear power plants and toxic waste; the right side is a thriving ecosystem where different flora and fauna are being protected and sustained in an eco-friendly way. With this, we can choose which side we want to be on, tipping to the left will be surviving in a toxic wasteland filled with smoke-covered air or tipping to the right, letting us thrive in an eco-friendly society with clear air. The choice is ours to make and we can do the right thing by tipping to the right, bit by bit, the pros will outweigh the cons which can lead to a more sustainable lifestyle for everybody that can end the factories and industries that want to destroy it.

REFLECTION
I personally thought that this assignment was quite fun in the way that I was able to experiment with different tools that I've learned over the course of these few weeks. Being able to make anything to my heart's content was always fun when it comes to creating something from scratch and the fact that I deviated from my sketch means that I was able to think outside the box to change my work for the better. Even though I didn't make it into the finals for the competition, I had a blast in being able to ask my friends and lecturers for advice and help; this helps me improve in future projects to come.
