Experience
Before going into Advanced Typography, I had already done Typography in my first semester, giving me ample knowledge of how this module would work. Yet it was still a daunting feeling when I realised that even if I did have prior knowledge of typography, it still wasn’t enough for me because the new challenges I was facing were troublesome and skull-cracking. Where I lacked dedication and inspiration, my works showed those flaws which made me even more self-conscious about my future works; but I decided that it was not the time to doubt myself and create structural systems, wordmarks, presentations and applications with the best of my abilities. Mr Vinod was also a huge help when it comes to gaining feedback, insight and random inspirations since he has been through most of my struggles and can relate to them which honestly helped me buck up and keep going forward to achieve greater heights.
Observations
From what I’ve seen throughout the 14 weeks of Advanced typography, I was able to become more meticulous and observant about typefaces and their designs with my newfound knowledge and practices. One instant would be me watching a video where a YouTuber was promoting their typographic shirts and I was able to pick up certain details that could’ve made the shirt better which honestly surprised me when I figured out that I was the one that’s critiquing merchandise of others.
Findings
Typographers are known to be meticulous and hardworking when it comes to creating typography work but the new knowledge and practices I’ve done for this semester, it’s given me another great appreciation towards them. They need an immense amount of skill and knowledge to execute even the simplest works, yet they are still able to convey messages instantly towards design and non-design audiences. Using systems that show the best layouts and compositions to create a whole new font that can help solve unknown problems, typographers give the world a more visual world and without them, we wouldn’t be able to have the aesthetics that we know and love today.
