REFLECTION

Experience
Before doing this class, I didn’t really care about the minor analytical parts of words or fonts, and only cared about the aesthetics; this part would be demolished after taking typography classes with Mr Vinod and figuring out that those minor analytical parts are very important. My experiences and feelings towards this module can range from proud and irritated as sometimes when I thought my work was good, Mr Vinod thinks otherwise and vice versa. However, there’s always truth in his words when he gives feedback as he does have 40 years of experience to back up his claims on why our type may be bad and how it can be improved. I can also see my own improvements since I started and the end of week 14 is huge, from the start of making my own type expressions to kerning and tracking to making my own typographic spread and finally my own personal font and poster. Overall, all of those achievements show me and others what I’ve done to overcome Mr Vinod’s judgement and what stuck with me to give me a very stressful but pleasant term with this module.

Observation
Throughout the 14 weeks I’ve seen, I have become more meticulous and observant regarding fonts and typefaces that pique my interest. I seem to be able to nitpick the small details that normal people can’t and be more meticulous in my own work to show Mr Vinod the good results he expects of everyone. I’ve also come to find out that looking at other classmates’ works can help spark my own curiosity and the inspiration I need to improve my work to the best of my ability.

Findings
With these 14 weeks, I can see that typography is a meticulous and beautiful art form that can be interpreted in different ways depending on each typographer’s design and style. Being careful and hardworking is also another trait a typographer needs to create good typography, with a basic understanding of typography and measurements such as grids and baselines, may give them limitations but these limitations help put an expectation that is needed in making good typography. All typographers have rules to keep them in check and this helps them to create good typography that can transcend decades of other typography that can’t.
