Howl’s Moving Castle is still one of my favourite Ghibli films and it’d be a shame to not include it here when I found that someone made a collage of it.
To go into specifics, I like the way that Bradly Owen, the creator of this collage, inserted most of the beloved characters in here, giving me a warm feeling whenever I see them and recall the scenes they were in. The composition of each character was placed strategically, which is a detail liked a lot, at where Sophie had met them or had a significant role towards her life. The most notable ones are Howl and her at the bottom right, being the main characters of the story after all, followed by Calcifer and Markl in The Moving Castle and the old wallpaper background to the Turnip-Head and the old dog being her guides in the story throughout stary nights.
The background breaks into different materials or scenes from the film, starting at the top left with dark blue feathers that shows Howl’s transformation to a bird-like creature, next is a star night where Howl made a wish and engulfed the star that made Calcifer. Then into the Moving Castle where it started and ending it with an old wallpaper as to set when this film was depicted which is around the early 20th century and where the gang had ended up when the war was going on in the film. This tells me that Bradly has a basic understanding of the film and was able to deliver the story despite the restraints of it being a collage which was pretty neat!
The words also play a significant role in the collage even though they weren’t said in the film. “You still feel like home” signifies that Sophie doesn’t care what place it is, as long as there’s Howl, anywhere would feel like home. “There is no one like you” depicts Howl’s love towards Sophie, as there’s no one like her that he’s willing to sacrifice his life for. Quotes like this elevate the collage into a more romanticised version of the film which is something else I also love!
Overall, the whole collage is just a heavily summarised version of the film, giving me a huge nostalgia trip back to when I first saw the film!
This caught my eye as a person who’s interested in character design. Possym is the creator of this collage.
The character is somewhat portrayed in this mysterious but sad tone, with it being drawn in an eerie art style while having quotes like “the pain of not being loved” and “Where is my mind?”. This puts the character at a whole new level of depth where now I want to know what had happened to them in the past to come to this conclusion. I really like this as it shows that a collage can create a lot of depth with a character with just simple writing and stylistic choices.
There are other graphics in the collage that can tell us more about her personality or her interests. The cassette tapes and music notes may be something she is interested in while the earth and stars are something she longs for. The eye and heart may be depicting her mental state as the quote “the pain of not being loved” is above the heart, insinuating that she’s heartbroken and the area around the eye is red, also showing that she cries a lot. This helps me to shape my perspective and think more outside the box when it comes to designing a character-specific collage.
Possym’s use of muted tones of reds and yellows helps add to the eerie vibe a lot more. It also helps stand out from the background of old newspapers. I really like the use of newspaper as it makes the background more noisy and crowded, instead of a plain background which contradicts the character's thoughts.
Overall, the character was portrayed well even with a few simple quotes and graphics.
When I saw this collage, I immediately thought of the colours and their supposed representation.
The collage was made by Klawe Rzeczy, a design studio from Poland that focuses on collage art. What I really like about this collage is the abstract nature of it, a person with a sunflower for a head is towering over the mountains. It’s something really abnormal but it doesn’t feel out of place when looking at it!
The colours are also a plus within this collage, a monochromatic shade of cream colour, with a striking red behind the subject, really brings the whole thing together! Using white as the shadow to differentiate the background and the subject was also a really cool touch that I have to try out in my collage!
Another thing that I really like is the shapes used in the collage, the organic red shapes with the clean-cut square background contrast very differently which makes the collage stand out even more than the first 2 designs where the background is noisy with different patterns and colours while this collage is simple and elegant.
Overall, I quite like the simplistic design this collage has and will experiment more when finding materials for my collage.
