WEEK 1

  • Learned what we would be doing in this class and an introduction towards Digital Photography and Imaging.
  • Creating an E-portfolio blog
  • Pinterest Board for inspiration
Fig 1.1, Pinterest Board for Collage References

  • Choose 3 graphic design composition works/collages that I like and explain them in detail.

Pinterest Collage 1:
F.g 1.2, Howl's Moving Castle Collage

Howl’s Moving Castle is still one of my favourite Ghibli films and it’d be a shame to not include it here when I found that someone made a collage of it.

To go into specifics, I like the way that Bradly Owen, the creator of this collage, inserted most of the beloved characters in here, giving me a warm feeling whenever I see them and recall the scenes they were in. The composition of each character was placed strategically, which is a detail liked a lot, at where Sophie had met them or had a significant role towards her life. The most notable ones are Howl and her at the bottom right, being the main characters of the story after all, followed by Calcifer and Markl in The Moving Castle and the old wallpaper background to the Turnip-Head and the old dog being her guides in the story throughout stary nights.

The background breaks into different materials or scenes from the film, starting at the top left with dark blue feathers that shows Howl’s transformation to a bird-like creature, next is a star night where Howl made a wish and engulfed the star that made Calcifer. Then into the Moving Castle where it started and ending it with an old wallpaper as to set when this film was depicted which is around the early 20th century and where the gang had ended up when the war was going on in the film. This tells me that Bradly has a basic understanding of the film and was able to deliver the story despite the restraints of it being a collage which was pretty neat!

The words also play a significant role in the collage even though they weren’t said in the film. “You still feel like home” signifies that Sophie doesn’t care what place it is, as long as there’s Howl, anywhere would feel like home. “There is no one like you” depicts Howl’s love towards Sophie, as there’s no one like her that he’s willing to sacrifice his life for. Quotes like this elevate the collage into a more romanticised version of the film which is something else I also love!

Overall, the whole collage is just a heavily summarised version of the film, giving me a huge nostalgia trip back to when I first saw the film!

Pinterest Collage 2:
Fig 1.3, Character Specific Collage

This caught my eye as a person who’s interested in character design. Possym is the creator of this collage.

The character is somewhat portrayed in this mysterious but sad tone, with it being drawn in an eerie art style while having quotes like “the pain of not being loved” and “Where is my mind?”. This puts the character at a whole new level of depth where now I want to know what had happened to them in the past to come to this conclusion. I really like this as it shows that a collage can create a lot of depth with a character with just simple writing and stylistic choices.

There are other graphics in the collage that can tell us more about her personality or her interests. The cassette tapes and music notes may be something she is interested in while the earth and stars are something she longs for. The eye and heart may be depicting her mental state as the quote “the pain of not being loved” is above the heart, insinuating that she’s heartbroken and the area around the eye is red, also showing that she cries a lot. This helps me to shape my perspective and think more outside the box when it comes to designing a character-specific collage.

Possym’s use of muted tones of reds and yellows helps add to the eerie vibe a lot more. It also helps stand out from the background of old newspapers. I really like the use of newspaper as it makes the background more noisy and crowded, instead of a plain background which contradicts the character's thoughts.

Overall, the character was portrayed well even with a few simple quotes and graphics.

Pinterest Collage 3:
Fig 1.4, Simplistic Collage

When I saw this collage, I immediately thought of the colours and their supposed representation.

The collage was made by Klawe Rzeczy, a design studio from Poland that focuses on collage art. What I really like about this collage is the abstract nature of it, a person with a sunflower for a head is towering over the mountains. It’s something really abnormal but it doesn’t feel out of place when looking at it!

The colours are also a plus within this collage, a monochromatic shade of cream colour, with a striking red behind the subject, really brings the whole thing together! Using white as the shadow to differentiate the background and the subject was also a really cool touch that I have to try out in my collage!

Another thing that I really like is the shapes used in the collage, the organic red shapes with the clean-cut square background contrast very differently which makes the collage stand out even more than the first 2 designs where the background is noisy with different patterns and colours while this collage is simple and elegant.

Overall, I quite like the simplistic design this collage has and will experiment more when finding materials for my collage.

  • Find materials for the physical collage.

WEEK 2

  • Learned about left and right-hand placement and how it connects towards the brain. Left-hand dominant people are usually messier as the right brain handles the creative side. In contrast, right-hand dominant people are usually more logical as the left brain is more logistical.
  • Watched a video made by the lecturer about how to do layering and composition with physical materials needed for the collage to create a nice and pleasing composition.
  • Upload 3 collage ideas in the Google doc given in Google Classroom, the deadline is by Friday.
  • Give the physical collage on Week 3.
  • Cut up the materials for the collages, find 3 compositions that I like, and show them to the lecturer.
Fig 2.1, Cut-up Materials from Magazines

Physical Pre-composition 1:

Fig 2.2, Physical Pre-composition 1

The first collage utilises cut-up pieces to create a background and focal point rather than just a focal point collage. I was leaning towards an Asian night market scene with a colour scheme of red, yellow and black, this helps creates a put-together background which contrasts with the human's blue and black clothes.

Physical Pre-composition 2:

Fig 2.2, Process of Physical Pre-composition 2

The second collage was made with scrap materials that I got from cutting up the materials, I had somehow arranged them to look actually decent which made me think of an idea where I would have my character as the main focus while the background is made of scrap material.

Fig 2.3, Physical Pre-composition 2

I decided to add more colour and words to set out the contrast between the foreground and background as it felt very empty and bland.

Physical Pre-composition 3:

Fig 2.4, Physical Pre-composition 3

This collage was inspired by Japan and its culture.  I wanted something to capture the focus which lies in the landscapes, clothing and places that they have to offer. I mostly just tried to fit everything in a neat format to show each place as best as I could.

FINAL Physical Collage

Fig 2.5, Final Physical Collage

Mr Fauzi liked this one the best as he felt that it resonates with his personal style the most, therefore I'm quite happy to find out that he liked this style since it improved from what I had envisioned before.

WEEK 3

  • Learned about the Lasso Tool, Pen Tool and Layering.
  • Used Lasso Tool, Pen Tool and Layering into the images given on the Google Drive, which we have to make into our 3 digital collages.
  • Make 3 digital collages with the photos in Google Drive in Photoshop, submission is due on Week 4.

Digital Pre-composition 1

Fig 3.1, Digital Pre-composition 1

A modern yet simplistic collage where I took different elements and added perspective to it. The man in brown is the main subject as he contrasts the most with the background and initial colour scheme of blue, white and black. It also focuses on the subject in the foreground rather than the noisy background which gives a surreal yet serene environment.

Digital Pre-composition 2

Fig 3.2, Digital Pre-composition 2

This composition is a simple one and it takes components from a specific photo that shows people in a subway. I wanted to make a composition that focuses on the elements in the subway while the guy is just a way to add a focal point for people to look at.

Digital Pre-composition 3

Fig 3.3, Digital Pre-composition 3

I wanted to create a simplistic yet aesthetic collage where it focuses on the fish. I'm using its colour scheme to add details towards the subject while the swirly backdrop indicates the fish's habitat which is usually in the water.

FINAL Digital Collage

WEEK 4

  • Public holiday but was given at a later date.
  • Learned about the Adjustment Layer and Filters.
  • Tried out the adjustment layers and filters with the final digital collage that I liked.

After adjustments:

Fig 4.1, After Adjustments to Final Digital Collage

Mr Fauzi said that the collage itself is already great so I didn't need to change much besides the saturation. I played into it and changed the saturation and also increased the lightness a little bit to show more of the other textures that were otherwise harder to see like the ground the man is standing on.

WEEK 5: Project 1B: Exercise 1(Heart Mansion)

  • Public Holiday but was given at a later date.
  • An introduction towards lighting and the Dos and Don'ts of what to do for lighting.
  • Learned what we can do to make professional photography set up at home.
  • Quick Selection tool
  • Layer Mask
  • Filters
  • Colour Correction
Shazam Exercise:
For the tutorial, we were given a demo video to use to create the Shazam exercise as a practised outcome to test our knowledge.

WEEK 6: Project 1B: Exercise 2(Recolouring)

  • Briefed us about the 7 principles of poster design.
  • Learned about photography basics.
Exercise 1:
For the tutorial, we were tasked to do a recolouring tutorial and the objective is to turn a black-and-white photo into a coloured photo, this counts as Exercise 1.

Exercise 2(Part 1):
Once we were finished with Exercise 1, we moved on to Exercise 2. Exercise 2 is similar but we used the 'Select and mask' tool to help create better outlines that we can colour in

FINAL Exercise 2 (Part 1)

Fig 6.4, Final Outcome of Exercise 2(Part 1)

Exercise 2(Part 2):
For Part 2, we were tasked to choose any of the pictures given in Google Drive and search for references that we liked and wanted to colour the black-and-white photo with. These were my references.

Fig 6.5, References for Exercise 2(Part 2)

Using the same demo video, I used the same methods that were shown in the video to recolour the black-and-white photo with the hair and skin colour references we searched.

REFLECTION

In these past weeks, I found the tasks and exercises quite fun! Especially the digital collages where I was still limited but have more free rein towards what I could and couldn't have in my collages. During the first few lectures, Mr Fauzi helped us with the basics of Photoshop and how to use it which I found very fun; personally, if I was able to do things in a completely new program, I would be very impressed with myself! Anyways, I've learnt quite a few things that helped me with my understanding towards this module and I'm also excited to learn new things that can help me with my future assignments.
